Moon had a keen interest in acting and modeling from childhood. She was also very fond of singing. As a child she performed as a child singer for All India Radio and Doordarshan Kolkata.

She moved to Pune in 2003–2004 for her studies. At that time she had no relatives in the city and had arrived there all alone. Initially she stayed in a paying guest (PG) accommodation. Alongside her studies she had also decided to pursue a career in the world of acting.

Subsequently she gave numerous auditions and landed opportunities to work in several advertisements. She used the earnings from these ads to pay her PG rent and college fees. It would not be wrong to say that she struggled significantly during her early days.

In 2004 she participated in the auditions for the show ‘Hum Sab Baraati’. She was selected thanks to her beauty and excellent performance. At the time she was a first-year college student.

However her early days in acting were not easy as she had no prior experience. There were times when she would continue acting even after the director called cut. People on the set would often laugh at her because of this habit. Yet she soon improved and things gradually normalized. Subsequently she worked on the show ‘Hum Sab Baraati’ for several years.

While working on ‘Hum Sab Baraati’ she got the opportunity to work in ‘Mumbai Xpress’ and subsequently in ‘Taarak Mehta Ka Ooltah Chashmah’. She worked on ‘Mumbai Xpress’ for about a year to a year and a half.

Following this Munmun Dutta played a supporting character named Shuli in the film ‘Holiday’ released in 2006. It was not a lead role but rather a small supporting part. However she did not gain significant popularity from these projects.

Then came the day she had been waiting for for years. In 2008 auditions for Taarak Mehta Ka Ooltah Chashmah were being held in Mumbai. Her audition went very well; additionally Dilip Joshi recommended her for the show.

The show became so immensely popular that it has been entertaining audiences continuously since 2008. It was thanks to this show that Munmun Dutta became a household name and established herself as one of the most popular actresses in the television industry
